Working in Gaithersburg
Gaithersburg has an old side and a newer one. Olde Towne grew up around the B&O railroad, which reached town in 1873. Kentlands, west of I-270, was planned in 1988 as a neighborhood of houses, townhouses and shops, and its first residents moved in in 1991. Lakelands was built next door.
About half the homes in the city are rented. If you own one of them, the City of Gaithersburg licenses rental homes every two years and inspects them inside and out, so it pays to get the repair list done before the inspector comes.
In Kentlands and Lakelands, the first homes are now about 35 years old. That's when original doors, trim and decks usually start to need repairs.
