Working in Damascus
Damascus sits at the top of Montgomery County, where Ridge Road (Route 27), Route 108 and Route 124 come together. The land around it is part of the county's Agricultural Reserve, so the town still feels rural, with neighborhoods clustered around the center. It's about 20 minutes north of my base in Germantown.
Close to nine in ten Damascus households own their home, and about three in four homes are single-family houses. About half were built in the 1970s and '80s. Houses that age often need new deck boards and railings, fence posts and gates set straight again, and doors and windows that close and seal properly.
I also do the seasonal work. I wash and stain decks and fences, clean gutters in the fall, and hang holiday lights, then come back to take them down after the season.
